Lanterns at Balagtas Boulevard, San Pablo City is getting ready for Christmas 2014.

Lanterns At Balagtas Boulevard, Christmas In San Pablo City 2014

A few days ago, I was able to get a few pictures of Balagtas Boulevard while walking early in the morning.

You will see one of the pictures behind me but here is a smaller version of the picture.

As you can see, Balagtas Boulevard is already decorated with Lanterns. They may not be the best looking lanterns in the world but they're better than nothing.

Besides, they're still good to look at and they're a good reminder to everyone that Christmas is almost upon us.

Here are the pictures (there are only 2 of them). These pictures were taken using my phone's camera. That's why the quality is not very good.

Typhoon Ruby made its landfall a few hours ago in Eastern Samar.

Typhoon Ruby, San Pablo City, 12:35 AM, 12/07/2014

It's 12:35 AM and, here in San Pablo City, we are already feeling some strong winds. I'm not sure if these winds are from Typhoon Ruby because its still very far from San Pablo City.

Judging from Pagasa's forecast, Typhoon Ruby will not go over San Pablo City but it will be very close. Here is a screenshot of Typhoon Ruby's projected path as it crosses the Philippines.

It will pass over North of Mindoro and that is the closes it will get to San Pablo City.

Typhoon Ruby Update, Laguna Signal Number, San Pablo City, 12/07/2014

Last night, we felt some strong winds but they eventually stopped. This morning, it's windy but it's not typhoon strong yet.

Also, the entire province of Laguna is currently under Public Storm Warning Signal Number 2.

It means that we will be experiencing winds as fast as 61 to 100 kilometers per hour which is strong enough to uproot trees and tear through roofs.

Still, I'm hoping and praying that Typhoon Ruby will pass through the country without causing any casualties.

The date is December 8, 2014 and the times is 12:30 AM. San Pablo City is now under Public Storm Warning Signal Number 3.

We are currently experiencing some rains and we are definitely feeling the wind right now. Unfortunately, it will get stronger as Typhoon Ruby gets closer to San Pablo City.

Also, based on PAGASA's tracking the center of the typhoon will not go over San Pablo City.

Currently, Typhoon Ruby is traversing the Sibuyan Sea moving West Northwest at 10 kilometers per hour.

It's maximum sustained winds is 140 kilometers per hour near the center and it has a gustiness of up to 170 kilometers perhour.

Typhoon Ruby Update, San Pablo City, Down To Signal Number 1, 6:00 AM, 12/09/2014

The date is December 9, 2014 and the times is 6:00 AM. I believe the worst is over because it's not raining that hard anymore. Also, the Public Storm Warning for San Pablo City is now back to just Signal Number 1.

Instead of Mindoro, Typhoon Ruby landed in Batangas and if you look at the picture, it came very close to San Pablo City.

Fortunately, Typhoon Ruby's maximum sustained wind speed went down to only 65 kilometers per hour. In fact, Typhoon Ruby is no longer classified as a Tropical Typhoon but just a Tropical Storm.

Baby Jesus disappeared or was he stolen? I don't know. All I know is this, he is missing right now.

A few days ago, my wife noticed that Baby Jesus was missing from the Belen in the City Plaza.

She asked one of the attendants where Baby Jesus was but the attendant was surprised to learn that Baby Jesus was no longer in the display.

My wife told me about it and I went with her to take a picture but the gates were already locked. I guess, they locked the gates to prevent further disappearances while they're looking for Baby Jesus.

I still managed to take a picture from outside the gates and Baby Jesus was not where he was supposed to be.

So, where did Baby Jesus go? Did a miracle happened or was he simply stolen?

LAKESIDE ARTISTRY IN SAN PABLO CITY

San Pablo City in Laguna, the City of Seven Lakes, is known for its scenic beauty and timeless history. Nesting at the foothills of Mount San Cristobal and Mount Banahaw, it is an urban-agricultural community rich in coconut plantations and aqua culture.

Fast becoming a hub for government and private enterprises, including an SM Mall, it I also emerging as a premier tourist destination.

San Pablo’s lakeside charm has been a source of inspiration for the community surrounding it, many of who are talented in the arts and known for their excellent craftsmanship.

Mallgoers recently had a glimpse crafts from San Pablo and the rest of My City, My SM, My Crafts recently made a stop at SM City San Pablo.  A joint project of SM, DTI’s Bureau of Domestic Trade, and the Philippine Star with support from CITEM and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, it is a celebration of traditional arts and modern Philippine design in the cities where SM has malls.

No less than Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez and Pila Mayor Wilfredo Quiat graced the event together with Laguna Provincial Board Member Angelica Jones, San Pablo Councilor Arnel Ticzon.  Project partner DTI came in full force led by DTI Provincial Director Susan Palo; while officials from the Department of Tourism – DOT-IV-A Chief Tourism Officer Marites Castro and San Pablo Tourism Officer Donna Eseo also showed their support for the project.

Internationally renowned make-up stylist James Cooper and Lucena Council for Culture and the Arts Chairman Archie Ilagan were also present.

SM officials led by SM Senior Vice President for Marketing Millie Dizon and SM City San Pablo Mall Manager Timothy Exconde and Assistant Mall Manager Abigail Mole gave the guests a warm welcome.

Guests enjoyed the program, which included a video presentation featuring Tarlac’s world- class crafts featuring Ramon Magsaysay Awardee and Card –MRI Founder Dr. Jaime Aristotle Alip as the video’s tour guide.

The event highlighted two facets of lakeside fashion: Filipiniana gowns by social enterprise Mga Likha ni Ina; as well as a dazzling collection by the San Pablo Circle of Fashion Designers inspired by the Seven Lakes of San Pablo.

Designers featured included Chris Gamo, Chico Estiva, Cecil Buenavidez, Raul de Chavez, Nicky Hernandez, Chiva Siason, Louie Pangilinan, and Jenny Belen.

It also featured the awarding of the Storyteller Doll Making Contest wherein ten participants had a one- week workshop by Casa San Pablo at the mall.

Judges included artist Carlito Ortega, Renel Batralo of Rolyolikha, and Forest Wood Garden’s Myrna Frago.

But the My City, My SM, My Crafts centerpiece was clearly the Craft Market inspired by the traditional Bahay na Bato in Luzon.  This beautifully designed showcase was a treasure trove of the best of the best crafts in the province, and was an instant hit among SM City San Pablo shoppers.

The Craft Market showcased Laguna’s amazing crafts: Sarilikha and Rolyolika’s exceptionally hand crafted products that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Pila, Laguna; Leandro Baldemor’s amazing woodworks from Paete, the Carving Capital of the Philippines; and sculptor Carlito Ortega’s figurative pieces inspired by Laguna folk art.

Social enterprise CARD-MRI highlighted its Mga Likha ni Ina collection, which features clothes made from fabric traditionally handcrafted by the T’boli, Mangyan, Ifugao, and B’laan cultural communities.  These products are not only beautifully crafted, but are also a source of livelihood to millions of Filipinos.

SM Prime Holdings created the SM Cares program which consolidates Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, ranging from environmental conservation, assistance to persons with disabilities and special needs, elderly and nursing mothers, as well as care for children, women and OFWs.

The SM Environment Committee is just one of the groups under SM Cares and it specifically aims to promote environmental sustainability through, mall, tenant and community endeavors while simultaneously combining “going green” with good business. We highlight our award-winning projects that include, among others the Trash to Cash recycling market held in the malls every first Friday and Saturday of the month, the Green Retail Agenda forum for mall tenants, contractors, and suppliers and of course, the SM Supermalls Green Bag. The SM Environment Committee aims to involve education as a primary way to cultivate the love of the earth.

The SM Green Film Festival (GFF) project aims to educate and make aware Filipinos to the plight of our earth today, a visual information campaign for eco-awareness. Starting July 2015, SM will open our cinemas to students for a free screening of environmentally-theme films and documentaries. The GFF is to be held every third Tuesday of the month, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM in 57 cinemas of the SM Supermalls and Waltermart. The target is to reach 1 million grade school and highschool students. March and December will have special screening dates on the first Tuesday of the month due to the class schedules. The malls are encouraged to add more screen dates for special student groups to reach the goal.

The materials to be screened will consist of environmentally-themed films and documentaries. We will prefer films in the vernacular so that the school children will better understand the issues and the concerns we all face in the Philippines. Our partner GMA 7 has agreed to provide the initial materials, two station-produced documentaries entitled “Ground Zero” and “Pagbangon” which run for approximately 50mins each. The former features natural disasters here and abroad while the latter is an award-winning documentary on the effect of Super Typhoon Yolanda on survivors. The Climate Change Commission has also contributed a 5-min info video on the Top 15 Ways to LEDS (Low Emission Development Strategies).

To spread the environmental advocacy using the visual medium, SM aims to show the beauty of our planet, to teach the value of conserving our shared resources and to plan and practice environmental efforts towards a sustainable future for our children’s children.  SM Prime Holdings President, Mr. Hans T. Sy, is a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group (PSAG) of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and has committed to furthering disaster awareness locally, in our places of operation as well as our tenants and customers which we consider stakeholders in our company.  *Launch is on July 7 2015 at 9 am Cinema 2 and for seat reservation in SM City San Pablo you can call 5210008. The My City, My SM, My Cuisine cookbook recently won two Gourmand World Cookbook Awards during recent ceremonies in Yantai, China.

The book was honored with a Prestige Award by the International Jury, and placed third in the Local Cuisine category, qualifying it to be among Gourmand’s Best in the World.

Founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards is sometimes described as the Oscars of Food Awards.  It celebrates cookbook and wine publishing, and features many renowned chefs every year.

This year’s awards drew more than 12,000 entries from 205 countries.  “It is a big success to be in the list,” says Gourmand Awards President Edouard Cointreau.  “The quantity and quality of entries has reached a new high this year.”

“A total of 205 countries participated in the Gourmand Awards,” he adds. “All the books listed are truly excellent in very different ways.”  If Mr. Cointreau’s name sounds familiar, he was born in the family of Cointreau liquor on his father’s side, and Remy Martin and Cognac Frapin on his mother’s side.

A celebration of Philippine regional cuisine, the book is a compilation of the My City, My SM, My Cuisine campaign that SM spearheaded from 2012-2013 in key cities around the Philippines where SM has malls.  A joint project with the Philippine Star, the campaign had more than 20 stops in SM’s host cities as far north as Baguio and as far south as Davao.

Published by SM through People Asia, the book has a special focus on heirloom recipes, a treasure trove of culinary gems from prominent families from each city.  In San Pablo in Laguna, Don Ado Escuder’s Pancit buko was featured and Dr. Jaime Alip and his wife Ms. Annie shared their wonderful stories, and their prized family recipes – Kinilaw na Palakpaking Hipon and Kinamatisang Ayungin.

Some of these families had heroes for ancestors, and their descendants happily shared the favorite recipes of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Dr. Jose Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, and Mariano Ponce; as well as that of food historian Mila Enriquez.

Food is also culture, and the book also highlights community cuisine from the Cordilleras, the Aetas of Olongapo, the Manobo and Maranao of Davao, the T’boli of GenSan, as well as Barangay Iponan from Cagayan de Oro.

The My City, My SM, My Cuisine book is available at Kultura Filipino stores at SM Aura Premier, SM Makati, the SM Mall of Asia, and SM Megamall.

Same thing happened to Roving Guard Hernie Arabejo of Corinthians Integrated Security Incorporated when he returned a wallet he found during his roving inspection. The wallet contained ids and cash was also returned that same day to Nicole Mariane P. Ibe, a shopper of SM City San Pablo.

The Commission on Election recently signed a memorandum of agreement with Waltermart Community malls to set up satellite voters' registration and biometrics validation services in their malls.

With this, qualified voters may now register at the country’s first and leading community malls, and have their biometrics captured to vote in time for the May 2016 national elections.

In support of Comelec’s “No Bio, No Boto” campaign, Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said the poll body decided to bring this service to malls to help some voters who find it "difficult or inconvenient" to register in their local Comelec offices. Waltermart is a good choice as its malls are highly accessible and are conveniently located within communities.

“Waltermart community malls started toward specific communities which are not actually being served by the larger malls. So if you look at the places that are being served, these are unique places, and that’s what we are very thankful that Waltermart is supporting us as well.” Bautista said.

Meanwhile, Waltermart General Manager for Operations, Mr. Jeck Buñing said that the campaign is aligned with Waltermart’s vision and mission in uplifting lives of the communities it serves. And by holding the voters registration in their malls, they can assure them of convenience, safety and security.
